Some information on the JDM F22B DOHC engine
you came from: Master List > Engines

All Accords and Preludes in North America were sold only with Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) F-series and Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) H-series engines respectively. Outside North America, DOHC F-series engines were also available.

The ready availability in North America of used Japan Domestic Market (JDM) engines means the F22B has become a popular engine swap option. A correspondent of mine who has done this swap on a '93 Prelude has provided much of the information below.
Warning: I have never myself attempted the use of the parts shown at bottom. I have no way of definitively confirming that the parts listed below are correct for this application. The correspondent who sent me the original information seemed to me to be knowledgeable and I had no obvious reason to distrust him, but you must use your own judgement on your own car, and follow this page at your own risk. Always physically compare old parts with the new ones before actually installing the new ones. It would be nice if anyone else who attempts this repair with the parts shown below could send me their thoughts and experiences , if only to confirm the part numbers shown below worked for their engine.

Update Nov 21/08: A reader named John emails me to say that his daughter's '96 Prelude has an F22B, one that ended up needing a timing belt. The belt that came installed on the engine was not the correct one, and apparently was too loose, resulting in the belt eventually shredding. John tried out one of the part numbers shown at the bottom of this page, and confirms that it does in fact work for this engine. He also supplied more part numbers, from Dayco and Goodyear.
As John puts it,
[I found] a couple of sites with references to variances in engine blocks between imports & North American models. Specifically, to use the "proper" timing belt likely would require a change of the water pump (supposedly the pump gear is slightly bigger) OR to use a shorter belt... specifically one tooth shorter, amounting to 3/8" difference in length. I took the latter route.
This research brought me to your FAQ with the reference to "Gates part number: T132 (also fits 1988 Dodge Caravan 2.5L)"  I  looked up  the '88 Caravan, checked the belt and it was exactly 1 tooth shorter. I purchased it, installed it... fit perfect (with a bit of cursing with the extra tight fit) and the tensioner is now at the far tight end with just enough slack to give room for installing .... PERFECT."

This issue does not actually come up often in the Usenet groups, but I do get occasional private emails from people who either have cars that came with F22B's or who have installed one into a car that originally had something else. These people are usually looking for part numbers for the timing belt, balance belt and water pump. North American dealer databases do not readily have those numbers available, at least not such that you can find them using a North American VIN number.

As outlined on the Wiki pages above, there were several DOHC F-series engines available outside North America. The one I encounter most in private emails to me is the F22B, so this page gives the information I have for that engine.

Timing belt
Description: 126RU24 (126 teeth, round tooth profile, 24mm wide)
Honda part number: 14400-PT2-004
(The Honda belt will be about $90. Aftermarket belts will be more like $20.)
Gates part number: T132 (also fits 1988 Dodge Caravan 2.5L)
Dayco DY95132 Timing Belt (Dayco - 95132, DY95132, B000C0TFV8)
Goodyear Gatorback 40132
Duralast also makes this size belt, but I don't know that part number.

Balance shaft belt
Description: 70RU16 (70 teeth, round tooth profile, 16mm wide)
Honda part number 13405-PT0-004 (same as '93 Prelude H23A1)
(Honda belt about $60, aftermarket more like $15.)

Water pump
Same pump as that used on US-market '93 Accord 2.2L SOHC F22A

Tensioners, oil filter, all gaskets and seals
Same as those from US-market '93 Prelude 2.3L DOHC H23A1

Other parts (notes from my correspondent)
Timing cover and crankshalt bolt must be from the JDM F22B (they are different from the H23A1). They are marked "PT2".
The H23A1 knock sensor does not fit into the oil sensor hole on the F22B, so use a brass 1/8 to 1/4 pipe thread adapter ( I got mine off an old auto tranny line fitting) make sure to seal all threads to avoid oil leaks.
The H23A1 oil sensor has to be swapped over also (hole is plugged in the F22B).
Don't bother trying to swap the water lines for the oil cooler; it's not worth it.
